EoTD: Could never get the hang of Thursdays

The brother is gone back home, my house is somewhat back in order, and I have a few days’ worth of pictures to post. But I can at least get today’s look posted. I’ve gotten rather accustomed to using five and six colors in a look. Now, two or three colors seems somehow…incomplete. (I’ve also found that I’m more easily able to create a look that uses an odd number of colors, as opposed to an even number, where I have to get a bit creative with placement.) The odd things you learn…

Beauty Blogs’ Backstage: an interview with Yinka, of Vexinthecity

Two months in a row I get to participate in Beauty Blogs' Backstage!! (Whenever there are an odd number of participants, I am the Person Without Partner...it does mean that I'm always free if someone has to be angeled that month because their partner has to drop out; but it leaves me feeling like I'm sitting on the sides watching everyone else have fun :D ) This month, I interviewed Yinka of Vexinthecity, an enthusiastic beauty and fashion blogger from the UK who's been shortlisted as a finalist for the 2010 Black Weblog Awards. I've followed Yinka's blog for about a year off and on, and was glad when she signed up for Beauty Blogs' Backstage...and doubly glad when I randomly set up the partners for August and ended up with her name!

  1. What started your obsession with beauty/makeup?
Thinking back, I had more knowledge than the average 11 year old about brands my Mum used frequently when I was growing up, such as YSL, Fashion Fair, Elizabeth Arden and Clinique - she was always coming home with Bonus Time gift sets! Unknowingly, she aroused my interest in beauty from the beginning and I used to love watching her get ready for parties, sneaking into my parents bedroom and playing with her make up when they'd left.

Reading and posting on the beauty forum over at Handbag.com for five years, encouraged me to take more notice of brands and products. I remember going to Selfridges one day for a MAC makeover, where unfortunately I was made to look like an Oompa Loompa from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. However, I bought my first MAC products that afternoon, and so it began! Prior to that I'd only used high street brands and I wasn't happy with the choices available to me so seeing the MAC counter with all these colours that suited me was a huge deal.

When I joined Specktra.net four years ago, my spending on make up went through the roof, but it was so much fun talking with other 'addicts' about new collections, shades and sharing recommendations. I look at my make up collection now and can credit 70% of my purchases to the ladies of Specktra.net!

EoTD: Ready for tomorrow

I am not a happy camper today. It isn’t horrific; but it’s just…bleah. I wouldn’t mind taking three or four aspirin, curling up in a fetal ball, and waking up tomorrow. Sadly…there’s the shopping to do. And prepping for my brother’s visit. And feeding the cats. Stuff like that.

EoTD: Rain in LA?!??

For about six different people, all of whom have semi-wistfully suggested that they wouldn’t mind a rainy day in the Los Angeles area. Possibly even three or four - though widely spaced. (I don’t think these people all know each other, either.) Any time y’all want rain, just take a day trip to the Pacific Northwest….except today, and for the next seven to ten days, when the Puget Sound will have temps in the 70s and 80s. (Yep - I know. Weird.)

EoTD: Kickstart

Got a fairly decent amount of stuff done this past weekend, towards rebuilding this site (and a bit towards some of my others). Still got a way to go, especially here…but overall I’m happy with my progress. This is the largest, most heavily trafficked of my personal sites, so I really wanted to get it fleshed out. I’m only about 25% of the way there…but, hey, 25%! Not too shabby.

EoTD: It’s Raining Again

So the burst of energy I had yesterday? Yep, used up rebuilding the site. (Hey, at least I got some good out of it. I also got the laundry done - so yay, productivity. Also - clean socks.) I’ve almost got something resembling a system in place, and should have all of the site entries back up…oh, by the middle of September, if not before. (That’s reposting a dozen or so entries a day, including any comments…all of which have to be tweaked in the database to show their proper posting time.)

Makeup via the Internet: a buyer’s manual

There’s another convulsion circling through the beauty blogosphere, regarding Bitchslap Cosmetics. Long story short, they were reselling items from Lady Burd and marking them up enormously. Apparently, according to one video I saw, people somehow were under the impression that BSC claimed to have made all of the items themselves. I never purchased items from Bitchslap Cosmetics, nor was I interested in doing so ($16 to $18 for one of those four-color shadow palettes that they call “paint wheels”? $12 for a pigment? And the names…to some, they say “fearless” and “edgy”. To me, they say “look, we found this theme in the gutter, and so we brought it back and cleaned it off a little (but not too much, because we want the grit) and we’re using it! Yayz!”) This all sounds oh so very much like the LimeCrime scenario of last year, and the Ginger + Liz dealio rocking the nail polish blogging world, that I just had to speak up.

There are a few terms everyone should know, a few things everyone should keep in mind, and a few sites everyone should probably bookmark. Let’s define them together, shall we?

I don’t know why, and I don’t care; but I seem to have found my second (third? fourth? fifth?) wind with regards to my eyecolor challenge. I’ve got four months left to go (because after adding so many shadows to my collection, I figured adding in 30 more days will help keep me from going insane), and have just over 300 colors to use in that time. So who knows, maybe I’ll make my one-year deadline after all?
