I hate weeks like this…

Posted by Laughing Muse on Sunday, March 07, 2010 at 01:02 PM in Miscellaneous • Permalink • 2 Comments

It’s been A Week. Got some long-lost mail returned, sent the first of a sideways-worded “I’d very much like my paycheck, please” emails to a so-called employer, redid the side yard (swapped out rocks for soil and grass), dealt with an ill kitty and a dead coffee grinder, got an order with a bunch of spillage and sulked about that for a bit, locked myself out of the house, whacked the everloving daylights out of my big toe, and had all the regular life joys to deal with. The high point of my week was the new episode of Caprica, and it was a Sam-light episode. (Still a great show, I loved the story developments and am eagerly anticipating next week’s episode…just not a whole lotta Sasha.)

And I just now realized that, on top of everything else, I forgot to post the Glamarazzi links for this week.

Can I just fast forward to Friday?

Cool new makeup techniques blog: Into The Palette

I taught myself makeup application, basically by looking at my own eyes and face, taking what little I know about perspectives and shading from drawing/art class way-way-way back in middle school, and watching some very basic tutorials. However, I’ve always known that there were things I’d be missing - and I didn’t feel like shelling out tons of money for full-on makeup artist classes, nor did I know where to start looking on the internet or in the library. And now it appears that I have a starting point…

Save me from myself!! ...not…

Just a little note to all the folks who comment, email, or tweet to me telling me that this or that company, from whom I purchase product, repackages/resells some of their products:

You’re not telling me anything I hadn’t figured out, on my own, over a year ago (and then confirmed just under a year ago). And yet I still will buy from these various companies if they have something that I like. For me, it’s not about buying “artisanal” or “original”. It’s about “what do I want” versus “what I don’t already have and can’t find elsewhere for a lower price”.

On new media and less-new media and privilege

Posted on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at 11:38 AM in Miscellaneous • Permalink • 3 comments

There’s been quite the kerfuffle - brought into prominence once again this past two weeks - over bloggers’ presence at fashion and beauty events. Comments and opinions have gone all over the place. Accusations have been leveled. Catfights have occured. Childishness has resurged. Wackiness has ensued.

Some print journalists are saying that bloggers aren’t real journalists, and so what right do they have showing up at beauty/fashion events and calling themselves media (or letting the companies give them media credentials)? Bloggers have fired back that they are professional writers (some are), that they are industry insiders (some are), and that they deserve the same kinds of privilege as print journalists (some do, some don’t.) Some journalists and bloggers have speculated on the need for some kind of regulation of beauty bloggers. Extreme persons on all sides of the current debate have gone to great lengths to make “the other side” look infantile, foolish, stupid, and generally inferior. The issue seems to boil down to privileges: who gets them, who doesn’t, and under what conditions or qualifications.

Rather than looking at this from the viewpoint of old-school journalists versus new-school journalists (with whom I group commercial bloggers), let’s look at it from the point of the folks controlling the much-desired and -debated privileges: the fashion and beauty companies.
