Maybelline’s Color Sensational Lipstick The Loaded Bolds collection

Sometime in late 2018 I went from not being a huge fan of bolder, vampier lip colors to wanting a deep red, a bold wine, a rich deep rose. I turned 50 in early 2019, so that might have been a trigger: I've never been one for 'rules' about makeup, but I just didn't like how I looked with stronger lip colors. But suddenly, I was more willing to try and actually enjoy wearing bolder lip shades. I started getting a few darker purples from other vendors...and then I stumbled on Smoking Red, from this collection. I also picked up three other colors, including Gone Greige. And then I picked up a few more colors. (And then I took a year to swatch more than two of them.)

Photos that show how the product actually performs...! See how I create my swatches

Four lip colors, swatched: Berry Bossy, Chocoholic, Fiery Fuchsia, and Grey Over It. Four lip colors, swatched: Gone Greige, Mauve It, Midnight Merlot, and Nude Thrill. Four lip colors, swatched: Raging Raisin, Rebel Pink, Sapphire Siren, and Smoking Red.

These all apply very smoothly and with strong color payoff and even coverage. Berry Bossy is the easiest to apply as a semi-opaque layer of color, but it's definitely not a semisheer lip color. It can just be made to act like it! These are all creme finishes, no shimmers or metallics. Just like other lipsticks, the color does fade after a few hours, especially if you're eating or drinking. I find that if I blot the colors fairly strongly, the initial color isn't the full-on bold but the fade is less obvious.

My absolute favorites are Berry Bossy, Violet Vixen, and Rebel Pink. I do also enjoy Shocking Red and Gone Greige, but not quite as much as those other three shades. Midnight Merlot is almost too dark a purple...for now. (Who knows how I'll feel in another year?) Mauve It is a more pigmented version of so many MLBB shades I've bought. Nude Thrill is good for when I want to wear one of my Buxom polishes and want its color to be more visible. A few of the shades - Midnight Blue, Dynamite Red, Orange Danger - didn't interest me as something I'd want to wear often, so I didn't even pick those colors up. (I ended up getting both Wickedly White and Pitch Black because while I won't have a need for either of these every month, the formula works very well for me and so I'd rather have these available when I do need a white or black lip color.)

The collection has been discontinued, but it's still possible to find scattered colors in different stores.
