BareMinerals’ Onyx

Not something that couldn't be found elsewhere. Plenty of elsewheres, and for less money (even for good versions, not just “matte black oxide that isn't water soluble.”) But a deep black matte is virtually a staple in an eyeshadow range, so let's see what Onyx has going for it:

Photos that show how the product actually performs...! See how I create my swatches

A montage of three images: top left, close-up of the eyeshadow in the pot; top right, the eyeshadow mixed with water and applied to bare skin; bottom left, the eyeshadow applied dry over primer.

It has no leave-behind, no sooty residue. Yet it will blend fairly decently.
It will blend, but I didn't have the best of luck getting it to truly "smoke out" by itself. Other colors will blend with it, but it won't soften on its own very well.
It foils well with water or with other mixing media.

So...not unique, but a good serviceable version of a matte black eyeshadow/liner.
