BareMinerals’ The Incredible Mixologist kit

Where most of the BE kits in the 2014 holiday season don’t do much for me because I already own most or all of the colors…this one caught my attention. Six new loose-powder colors, at full size, sounded fairly good. The shades looked like a nice mix, too - no greens or full-on blues anywhere, but those colors aren’t as universally appealing as eyeshadows, so I understood the logic.

And then the reviews began rolling in. And they weren’t good. The colors are bad, they don’t mix well…what?

Photos that show how the product actually performs...! See how I create my swatches

BareMinerals’ The Incredible Mixologist kit Kit: BareMinerals' The Incredible Mixologist

I think that BEHQ had a decent idea with this kit, but...realistically, these kind of kits are a neither-nor. Makeup artists and DIY craftspeople won't care to buy something like this to mix their own eyecolors because we know where we can get ahold of a wider range of raw materials, and for less. New makeup users won't necessarily care to try mixing their own colors because...well, it's a bit intimidating. There's not tons of product to work with, and if you don't like the results, you've wasted a large stock of your "inventory" figuring that out. Wearing the colors on their own has worked best for me. They don't adhere too well to bare skin, but (as usual for me, and for loose powders in general) using a primer takes care of that problem. The white was kind of a standard BE white: not super opaque, but decent enough. The other colors worked just fine...when I used them separately.

This kit contained:

  • Charmed, I'm Sure — medium coral-pink satin
  • Grand Illusion — soft black matte
  • Hocus Pocus — metallic copper-gold shimmer
  • Incantation — blue-violet sparkle
  • Poof — white matte
  • Tricksy — metallic medium gold sparkle
  • 3 empty mixing pots, 1 plastic scoop, and 12 blank labels
