BBAC 2013, Day 23: Olay Regenerist Serum

I tried using Olay Renerist Serum for the first time in 2007. I started paying closer attention to my skin, and so noticed the first age-related wrinkles and puffy skin around my eyes. I bought a pack of it at my local warehouse store, took it home, used it for about four days…and then got out of the habit. I'd use it sporadically, but the container mostly did sentinel duty in the vanity cabinet. After about two years, I threw it out. I'd used about half of it, but by that point I wasn't sure that it had much potency left - and I didn't see myself suddenly using it on a daily basis, either.

BBAC 2013, Day 23: Olay Regenerist Serum

In spring 2010, I bought another package of Regenerist Serum. I was starting to get a skincare regimen pulled together, and didn't want to splash out money on the super-expensive serums' full-size products until I knew that they worked for me. (Yep, you guessed it: warehouse store again.) I gravitated toward Olay because I'd used Olay's Moisturizing lotion for about a decade and liked the results, but also because Olay had been around for quite a while. They weren't being massively reformulated every three years, they weren't a skincare product that was added to a makeup line, they were a skincare-specialty brand. My grandmothers had used Olay products. This company probably had a few clues about how to make skincare effective and affordable. (Even if the Regenerist sub-brand was only introduced in 2003 or 2004, it's still part of the Olay family and has all that knowledge behind it.)

According to comparative studies by consumer groups, most anti-aging creams produce about the same results - which aren't much more than the results produced by moisturizer. This was one of the factors to my being so resistant to trying lots of anti-aging creams, serums, and soforth. Olay is a well-enough-known brand, though, and the cost was low enough, that I was willing to try it again…but hopefully this time I'd be able to stick to a routine and actually use the stuff.

Re-training myself did take a little bit of time, but I've found that if I apply it right after I get out of the shower, not only does it get absorbed more quickly and thoroughly, I'm far less likely to “skip a step” in my daily routine.  I use it daily around my eyes, and three times a week on my neck, elbows, and a few other problem areas (after exfoliation comes the anti-aging/moisturizing serum, definitely.) The container is easy to grip, doesn't roll, travels well, and doesn't dispense too much product. The packaging may not be as snazzy or graceful as some other products, but with very few exceptions, I've never been a package junkie. My one and only concern about this is that it's a clear-ish plastic, so it shouldn't be stored anywhere it will get direct sunlight, even if it's sitting on a shelf across the room from a window. Ideally it will “live” in an environment where the temperature and humidity are fairly stable - so any windowsill, or the shower area, are not good choices. Too much fluctuation in temperature will speed up the chemical breakdown of the product - meaning, it will be less and less effective. This product has an effective lifespan of two years, from the date of first use - but that doesn't mean that the product won't be less effective faster if improperly stored, or might not last just a little bit longer if you want to use up the last dregs before buying a new bottle.
