BBAC 2015, Day Eighteen: favorite cream shadows

I use cream shadows and eyeshadow pencils/sticks the same way: as both a color in and of themselves, and as a colored cream base to accentuate a given eyeshadow. Eye pencils travel a bit more easily, since you don't generally have to carry a separate applicator with you; and for the most part, eyeshadow sticks and pencils seem to come in a wider array of colors. Cream shadows have a smoother consistency, though. You also don't lose product when you sharpen a cream shadow. Both have their better points. I've got a heck of a lot of both.

I love cream shadows. I still have to use a primer under them to keep them from migrating on my oily+hooded eyelids, but I love how even a “neutral” or “invisible” cream base can really amplify any eyeshadow. Even more, I love that Maybelline has their Color Tattoo line and that they're permanent - MAC's Paint Pots are lovely, but the permanent range is somewhat limited in terms of shades and they're USD$20 a pop. I'm also saddened at Benefit's decision a few years ago to switch to the less-airtight plastic containers with domed lids. They look cute and the packaging style visually matches the rest of their line, but they aren't as easy to store stacked (like the other jars were) and the product dries out faster because the containers aren't as airtight.

I debated how to make this list. Should I have a separate category for the near-neutrals that I love using as cream bases rather than the standalone colors, like MAC's Soft Ochre or Maybelline's Nude Compliment? Should I include the gel liners in this list, since a few of them I use either way (and some of my cream shadows are really only used as liner-shades)?

Decisions, decisions.

<h3>Benefit's Get Figgy</h3> <h3>Benefit's Skinny Jeans</h3> <h3>MAC's Imaginary</h3> <p>A gorgeous heathered purple-navy that is deep enough to work well as a liner or a crease shade, along with an all-over deeper cream shadow. It makes a really dramatic backdrop for brighter shadows and liners. Currently, it's either being repromoted, or MAC has made this one a part of their regular line for now. (Seriously - I just checked the site this morning!)</p> <h3>MAC's Girl-Friendly</h3> <p>I got this years ago, and at some point MAC chose to discontinue the shade. It's a medium mauve, not necessarily spectacular looking and with no shimmer or other effects. Definitely a solid performer. I would not be surprised to see it come back into MAC's collection when these tones come back "in style."</p> <h3>MAC's Rubenesque</h3> <p>Shimmery gilded peach duotone that brightens the eyelid slightly and intensifies colors layered on top of it. I'll often wear this one with just an outer-lid deeper shade, because it complements blue-grey eyes really nicely.</p> <h3>Maybelline's Deep Forest</h3> <p>Muted sage cream. Soft enough that it doesn't overpower, deep enough that it's a definite color rather than a suggestion of one. This level of grey in the shade means that it plays up my eyecolor, makes it look more "slate" and a bit darker.</p> <h3>Maybelline's Pomegranite Punk</h3> <h3>Maybelline's Rich Mahogany</h3> <p>When the Fall 2012 collection from Maybelline came out, I initially wasn't going to get this one because, hey, look. Another brown. I was so glad I scooped it up, though! Red and gold and bronze highlights in this color mean that it's most emphatically not just 'another brown'. Can be used as a base layer, but with a color this multifaceted...why cover it up?</p> <h3>Maybelline's Seashore Frosts</h3> <p>I grabbed several of these as backups. It's a great summery eye color, very pale but with a good duochrome effect and a nice ability to catch the light. The "clone" that was released the following year was a paler blue, and didn't have as strong a duochrome. This was, in my opinion, the much better version.</p> <h3>Maybelline's Tough as Taupe</h3> <hr /> <h4>Honorable Mention</h4> <p>These are my must-haves, the ones that I find myself reaching for most often to intensify or be a backdrop for my eyeshadows.</p> <ul> <li>Benefit's Sippin n Dippin — very similar to MAC's Rubenesque, which did make the list. Either of these shades are great for a subtle duotone and highlight. <li>MAC's Idyllic — another variant of Artifact, one of my first MAC paint pots. This one was less blackened, and had more of the red color payoff. Great standalone color! <li>Maybelline's Creamy Beige — my all-around go-to "non-brightening" nude cream base. It helps increase the color intensity, but doesn't necessarily brighten or provide a contrasting background for the shadow. <li>Maybelline's Mossy Green — I love how this color looks! It's a good autumnal green. But it's a little on the patchy side, so I have to pay more attention when applying it to get good coverage. <li>Maybelline's Pure Nude — another great all-star basic shade. Sadly, this one was limited edition. </ul>
