BBAC 2015, Day Twenty-one: favorite highlighters and glows

I tend to not “get” highlighters. I've seen the tutorials for them, I know how other people use them. I don't like having extremely obvious highlights, and I'm also personally not fond of the whole “strobing” thing because just as I don't go through life surrounded by soft-focus lighting, I also don't go through life surrounded by three-point high-intensity lights. (Nor am I made out of highly buffed plastic. But I digress.) For the most part, I have very few dedicated highlighters in my collection. Almost everything that could be a highlighter, I can and do use for something else…and vice versa.

BareMinerals/Bare Escentuals “radiances” were my first experience with something that was supposed to be a glow powder. Some of them worked for me in their “intended” niche, others I made use of in other ways. Bare Radiance is too dark for my preferences, as a facial powder. On my lids, though, it looks rather nice. And my mom now uses Rose Radiance as her blush - it gives her just enough color and highlight, but not too much. It's not easy for her to accidentally overdo her blusher, and since she's retired and is So Over All The Societal Expectations, any makeup she uses needs to be as straightforward as possible. The various glow powders and “all-over” colors from indie companies also get creative use! I layer them over blushes, over eyeshadow, and sometimes use them by themselves.

BareMinerals' Clear Radiance

This isn't the one that I reach for most often, but it comes in as a close second. Pure Radiance is my "no-color-just-glow" everyday use shade, while Clear Radiance has a slight pink cast to it. It's extremely slight, so I can safely apply this after the rest of my makeup is on without worrying about changing my blush color. Sometimes I'll use this (or Pure Radiance) almost like a setting powder.

Lost in Makeupland's Golden Touch highlighter

The business is a few years' defunct, so it's not easy to find out if this was intended as a blush or as a highlighter. It's very sheer but does have a peach cast and gold glow, so it could be a blush...but I like the results I get when I use this for finishing or layering, rather than by itself. I can also use this on my lids, or up under my brow as a very subtle highlighter.

Meow Cosmetics' Crystalline Cat in Opal

Gives me a soft bit of coloring, with a definite glow. I also sometimes use this on top of blushes that I want to tone town just a little bit, without effectively mattifying them.

Meow Cosmetics' Bay Cat glow powder

Gives me a cool glow. The reflective particles look a little larger than the superfine finishing powders like Aromaleigh's Tritelia, so I definitely can't apply this with a denser brush...but I do like the effects that I get with this one. Will definitely only look good on people with neutral or cool skintones, though!

Meow Cosmetics' Present glow powder

I have to be a little more careful applying this, since it will try and turn into a smooth silvered near-metallic finish...but applied with a brush like elf's Stipple brush, and swept lightly over an area, I get a very VERY subtle silvering refraction without the near-robot look. (Past also does this, but with gold tones.)

TKB Trading's Moon Light highlighter
