BBAC 2012: Day 10 - Less than luxe

Sometimes, beauty products disappoint us - sometimes badly. Fortunately, it's become easier for consumers to be careful about their choices and to minimize disappointments. But they occasionally happen. My most recent two are from MYX and elf.

A few years ago, prompted by a lipstick-swatchfest post over at Phyrra's place, I placed my first order with Cherryculture. Since then, I can't say that I've shopped from that site regularly, but I've bought stuff there a few times a year. My most recent purchase from Cherryculture was some NYX Glam Aqua Luxe lipstick. I hadn't seen them available before, I couldn't find much on them, and I had hopes that they'd combine the extra bling of the Diamond Sparkle lipsticks with the creamy formula and staying power of the Black Label lipsticks.

Sadly, I was doomed to disappointment.

Photos that show how the product actually performs...! See how I create my swatches

A montage of three images: top left, close-up of the eyeshadow in the pot; top right, the eyeshadow mixed with water and applied to bare skin; bottom left, the eyeshadow applied dry over primer.

While the small line has some attractive shades, and while they do apply much more smoothly than the Diamond Sparkle lipsticks did, they have a little less staying power than NYX's Round lipsticks. When I wore Glory, most of the color had faded after about an hour. (Some of the sparkle stayed put, but there was some fallout from that too.) Reapplication just bought me another hour. I can't say that I had high hopes for these, simply because I didn't know about them for very long and had seem absolutely nothing about them on the beauty sites that I regularly follow. I don't know if I'll do a full write-up or not, but…these were definitely a disappointment.

Another product that I had hopes for was elf's Eye Transformer palette. One of my first makeup gifts was from an aunt of mine - a Dior shadow quad in four sheer, iridescent colored powders. I loved layering that on top of the Wet n Wild purple-blue eye pencil to get some really cool color effects, and I hoped that this palette from elf might act just a little bit similar. Sadly…it didn't. The powders were sheer, but they didn't have nearly as much of the iridescent shimmer effects. And since those powders are actually fairly easy to get ahold of, I had definite hopes that I'd find a nice, inexpensive, easy-to-carry replacement for my long-gone (and of course now-not-available) Dior shadow quad. I'm just glad that this product was so inexpensive. It didn't perform like I'd hoped it would.

After a weekend break from daily giveaways during the Beauty Blog Advent Calendar, I’m back. Since no one entered the Day 01 drawing, I’m adding one prize item and re-using the rest of it smile This is for continental North America only, because the prize includes two limited-edition glitter nail polishes from L’Oreal. Rafflecopter widget below, for logged-in members.
