In mid-2020 I bought the Carnival III palette and enjoyed it very much. Then I looked at Stacey Marie’s Carnival and Carnival II palettes, and noticed that they were a bit…similar. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good rainbow palette. It just seems odd that, when collaborating with a certain makeup artist, all of a brand’s palettes with that artist look so much the same.
Carnival IV, “The Antidote,” is not a(nother) rainbow palette. Instead of a variation on six shades, it has a warm side (many oranges, a handful of reds and a few yellows) and a cool side (almost entirely greens, with a few green-leaning golds), and a central column of creams, browns, pinks, and other “typical neutral” shades. I love this for several reasons: first, it’s not another rainbow palette in a line of rainbow palettes; and second, it seems that orange- or murky-green-centric palettes aren’t released nearly as often as reds, purples, jeweltone greens, even blues.
And I look so damn good wearing orange eyeshadow.
The shadows are arranged in associated groups. Draw a square around any nine colors, and all the colors in that sub-grid coordinate well with each other. This doesn't mean that colors from opposite sides of this extra-wide palette can't be used together - wherever you personally see a color combination, use it! This specific arrangement just provides a quick "key" for people who tend to get overwhelmed with these larger palettes.
Most of the warm-side colors are fairly saturated. There are warm and cool oranges and reds. While there are several shimmers, most of these colors have a matte finish. I specifically love the range of olive- and brown-toned greens! All of the colors are smooth and well-pigmented, and apply quite nicely. I don't get a lot of kick-up from these shadows, not even the mattes. I wish that the metallic colors were a bit better-behaved. They don't always apply smoothly. The product tends to clump up or flake away.
