First Impressions: ColourPop’s Crème Gel Liners

I initially did not hop on board the ColourPop train. It was pressed blushes - which I don't favor - and pressed eyeshadows - which I also don't favor. (And lipsticks, which…well, that alone wasn't enough to make me buy from them.) I was also initially leery because I heard nothing else about them, when they'd started, where they came from…they seemed to be not-there one day, all over social media the next.

Then, when the photos of ColourPop's liners began showing up, my primary question was: would I like the gel pots better, or the liner sticks better?

I started out with a kit - Fauncy - that contained both types of liner. (I would have been happier if it had actually contained the colors that were shown in the photo…but that's another story.) Once I saw how both the gel pots and the gel liners performed, I started making my list of the other gel liners (sticks) that I wanted to get.

On the upside, these are USD$5.00 apiece, for .2 gram / .01 ounce - more expensive per-pencil than the Physician's Formula ones, but these perform a little better and are in a wider range of colors. Then…there's that “wider range of colors” thing. White, pink, navy, green, maroon, purple, brown-black-grey for the diehard traditionalist crowd…they've got just about everything. The liner isn't waterproof on my lower lash line, but it dang well stays in place on my upper lash line, so add “longevity” to the list of positives.

There are some downsides, though.

The packaging isn't supercheap, but it isn't the best in the world. When I went to take the lids off of the liner pots, the cap casing came right off in my hand. It went back on fine, meshed like gears, and I could open the pot and close it again - but had I picked a liner up by the lid, and it had gotten to the height of my head before it fell, there may have been breakage. (Of the pot or of my toe, one or the other.) The liner-pencil caps do click closed nicely, though, so not only are they airtight, you know that you've thoroughly closed them.

The pretty holographic lettering on the sides of the liner-sticks is a right bitch to read. It also starts to flake away with handling, and after using the pencil a handful of times you've got a third of the lettering gone….which means that you'll eventually lose the name of your liner pencil, unless you label them yourself. (There's the color-knob on the end showing what color it is, but that won't help too much for the blacks, greys, and various dark browns.)

The liner-pencil product also isn't always adhered really well to the base, so if you open the liner-stick facing downward, you may just lose your liner product as it falls out and hits the floor. I had that almost happen to me. I thought I was prepared, because I was holding the pencil almost perpendicular to the floor, just at a very slight - virtually unnoticed - downward angle. When I opened the lid, the product started its slow-mo descent…and I kept the lid in place to catch it, and tilted the pencil upward as well, to use gravity to keep the product in.

A few of the colors, I wish were a bit truer to the swatches. DTLA shows up more navy than deep blue-teal. Best O shows up more burgundy-brown than deep burgundy. And I kind of wish that there were some deeper purples in the lineup, not just Piggy Bank. Aside from that, these liners are really good! I am starting to regularly switch between a Colourpop liner, or a Sephora matte liner or contour shadow liner for daily use.
