I first found Fauxlivia's blog Into The Palette back in February 2010, and occasionally visited both that and her other site The Unknown Beauty Blog. She's a been blogging for nearly three years, and frequently tweets about her latest obsession, Fringe. She's also got a cool feature on her blog where, if you “volunteer” for a tutorial, you can send in a photo of your eyes, your face, whatever…and through the magic of Photoshop, Fauxlivia will show you (and everyone else) how to achieve whatever technique you asked about.

Interview: Fauxlivia, of Into the Palette and Unknown Beauty Blog

  1. You actually work in the beauty industry, correct? How did you get started? What sparked your interest in working in that field?
Worked in fashion first in the 1980's, hung around a group of people and starting helping wardrobe people then learned some things from the make up people. Also, been told many stories of many designers that are still visible today. Back then they were just assistants of some fashion house. Oh wait, getting off the subject. I didn't think make up artistry was for me so I ended up wanting to go to beauty school because I was really obsessed with my hair and wanted to learn how to really color it (correctly). Ended up working in hair and now, let's just say, I consult. What got me into my makeup addiction? I think it was in the genes. More so, I just loved how makeup could transform people and how it made people react and interact differently. I guess you could say the psychological aspect of cosmetics is what I find interesting.
  2. What’s your biggest beauty-surprise-revelation (the color you never thought you could wear, the technique you swore wouldn’t work for you, the product that just blew your mind…)
I thought I could never wear a winged eyeliner look. I remember trying so often and it would end up looking droopy and sad. I gave up for the longest time until I compared the anatomy the Asian eye to the Caucasian/Occidental one; found the corresponding points and voila! Winged eyeliner for me!
  1. What’s your biggest beauty-product vice (aside from eyeshadows)?
My biggest beauty vice besides eyeshadows is eyeliners. After learning how to wing it, I wanted to try it in every color possible. And, every formula possible!
  2. What do you have more of, and why: lip colors, or nail colors?
Believe it or not, I have more nail polish than I do lip colors. I don't have the guts to wear black lipcolor or blue in public. I prefer those on my nails.
  3. I’ve noticed a lot of eye-makeup tutorials over on Into The Palette. Have you ever thought of doing blusher / bronzer / contouring tutorials? (I’d volunteer for that!!! I have the worst time learning how to properly apply blush…)
I do have some tutorials on faces like you mentioned and I would love to absolutely do more of the blusher/bronzer/contouring since there are many ways to apply. I just don't get enough people volunteering their face. I would love for you to volunteer for those and would be glad to do a tutorial!!!!!
  4. You’ve been tweeting a lot about Fringe these past few years. Are you a huge science fiction fan in general, or did Fringe specifically catch your attention?
Fringe piqued my interest because of the impossibilities becoming possible. I always liked shows with the time travel aspect in the storyline. Quantum Leap was one of my favorite shows. The short lived Journeyman was one I watched also but it got booted because it was pitted against football in the ratings game. This really left a hole in my time travel genre but Fringe came just in time. I am a fan and never miss an episode and also rewatch the seasons many times but if you asked me some trivia on Fringe, I would probably get it wrong. The details don't stick in my brain.

Am I a Sci-Fi fan? I don't think I qualify because aren't sci-fi fans obsessed with Star Trek? I confess here and now, I have only seen one complete episode of the original Star Trek. That show was the Trouble with Tribbles, I think that was the title. (I expect the tomatoes to be thrown at me!) I did watch Lost in Space though, I was obsessed with that when I was a little girl. I loved the robot! I haven't watched the usual sci-fi stuff like Firefly or Battlestar Galactica. But, I do watch Supernatural. Maybe, I am more of the paranormal sci-fi fan.
  5. Which bad (or not-so-great) beauty habit do you find yourself repeating over and over?
I have a bad habit of bleaching, okay over bleaching my hair. I think my hair is on the verge of damage although I try to be careful. I have damaged it once to the point the hair had to be cut to a length of a half an inch. My hair was 6" long before that. I couldn't wait for it to grow out! Even though I have lived through that agony and supposedly learned my lesson, nothing stops me from bleaching, not even when I burned my scalp from the peroxide! Yeah, I am dedicated or a total fool!
