When the Buxom Lip Pencils were discontinued, I was very unhappy. While there were other lip pencils, the ones from Buxom were firmer, applied more smoothly, had better color payoff, and had some shades that I loved. (I’m still in mourning for Brooklyn.) When Maybelline released their Super Stay Ink Crayons, I was cautiously optimistic. The colors looked like they were fairly well pigmented. The line started off with more medium-weight colors, but has since added several lighter shades.

During the first covid-pandemic year, Maybelline more than doubled the size of the collection. They released the Pink Edition and Spice Edition - five shades each - and added at least one color to the “core collection.” In the first half of 2021, they added another handful of shades. I have almost all of these except for the two most orange shades from the original lineup of twelve pencils.

I like these for several reasons. They have a wonderful texture - smooth and emollient without being slick or greasy, with excellent pigmentation but no “drag” when I’m applying them. They do come to a point, so it’s a lot easier for me to first line my lips and then fill them in. The point also gives me enough precision to slightly overline the right sides and balance my lips out. Since it’s retractable, there’s no product-waste when I need to sharpen; and since the lid is thicker and snaps shut, the product doesn’t dry out. They’re also at a “drugstore” price, even if it’s the upper end of that range.

Despite the manufacturer's claims of 8-hour wear, I can get 3-4 hours of wear - with no lip primer - before I need to touch the color up. With my preferred lip primer (Bite Beauty), I can get closer to the advertised 8 hours of wear before I have noticeable fading...as long as I don't eat or drink!

I don't consciously try to buy only cruelty-free makeup products, so the fact that this company is not cruelty free doesn't make me want to find a substitute for this product. If you personally strive to only shop for CF makeup, though, you'll want to try other lip products.
