My storage system: ArtBin’s Super Satchel Slim

When I started my makeup collection, I didn't have any storage system other than “stack them up on the bookshelves.” This solution didn't last long, for two reasons: one, I have a LOT of books and need the shelf space for them; and two, my makeup collection grew very quickly. I looked at other folks' storage systems, but I really wanted something that would let me see all of my colors. I needed to be able to view these stacks from the side, not from the top down. One day at Storables I found a particular container over with the scrapbooking supplies. It had five rows that were wide enough and deep enough to hold a standard BE eyeshadow jar - or several, stacked vertically. The box was clear plastic, so I'd be able to see my colors without having to open the container. And there were small removable plastic dividers that I could use for…well, I wasn't sure what, but figured I'd find a reason to use them occasionally. They were $13 at the time, and I couldn't find a listing for them anywhere on the ArtBin site. Once I got home and verified that yes, indeed, this would work, went back and bought seven more.

The Super Satchel Slim 8-compartment containers are 15.25 inches wide by 14 inches high, by 2 inches deep. One of the rows holds 17 standard 10-gram jars, if none of the subdivider inserts are used. (If you put them in just the right places, you can still get 17 jars in a row with one or two dividers.) The three wider fixed side-compartments hold a combined total of 22 jars (25, if you don't care about storing three of them on their sides.) As a delightful bonus, the rows are also the perfect size to hold paint pots, cream shadows, or the L'Oreal Infallible eyeshadows. I found these at Storables, even though they are nowhere on the Storables web site. A quick web search shows that these are also available at Walgreen's, JoAnn, and online art superstore Dick Blick.

Since then, I've added more and more of those trays until I have over 20 of them. I also found another container from the same line (Super Satchel 6-compartment, 15.25” x 14” x 3.5” deep) that is deep enough, and its three rows wide enough, to easily hold the 20- and 30-gram jars (blushes, the large foundation jar from Meow, et cetera.)

As with just about any storage solution, there are pros and cons. These containers let me see all of my colors easily, so that I don't have to hunt through every single jar for a particular shade. I can store several of these on-end, held between larger bookends. A single tray is fairly easy to pick up and carry for short distances. The lids latch closed, so that if one gets knocked over you're not going to have all your jars flying every which way. ArtBin even sells a storage cube with rails that will hold any of their Super Satchel trays neatly, for those who want a slightly more graceful solution than “arrayed on the floor of one's closet, stored like a mutant set of encyclopedias” solution that works perfectly well for me. On the downside, these aren't absolutely everywhere. Depending on where you shop and what sales or coupons you use, you'll pay between $13 and $19 per container. They're not as visually graceful or stylish as a vanity, or an Ikea Helmer or Alexis (and to some folks, visual flair in storage is as important as…well, as my having everything in jars that are the same size and style.) And if you keep your loose powder shadows in the 3- or 5-gram jars, those will rattle around in these rows and just won't store neatly. The individual trays are not necessarily the easiest to travel with, since they're almost the size of a coffee-table book and since they don't have an easy-carry handle. On the other hand, for at-home storage that lets you see everything inside, these are a perfect solution for me.

Personally, I absolutely love these trays. I may find a way to build storage that will hold them stacked vertically instead of horizontally, and something that I can add casters to (for easy mobility.) But I'm extremely happy with this storage solution!!
