Please pardon the gaps...

The site is in mid-migration now (manual migration of over 7,000 entries, so there's a lot to be done.) The entry stubs are created for older content, but for the most part, the actual content isn't there quite yet. I am working on it. Unfortunately I have no ETA. But feel free to link to any page! When the content does get populated, the URL will stay the same.

Nail news: Tronica, Anchors Away, and Intimate

When I saw the news about the upcoming Tronica collection of holographics from China Glaze, I mentally began preparing myself to go crazy trying to get these polishes. After all…holographics!! From China Glaze!!! Then I saw these photos of the Tronica collection, including swatches and in-bottle pics. And all of a sudden…I don't need the Tronica colors. (And the wallet breathes a sigh of relief.)

The colors look exactly the same as the colors from the OMG collection. There's a 1::1 correspondence going on there. This in and of itself might not be so unappealing…if the ‘holographic' effects were more like the OMG collection. Instead, they're more like the Kaleidescope collection: sparser particles of glitter, no “rainbow” effect like you get with all of the OMGs. I like the “rainbow” effect. If I'm going to paint my nails and not use a top coat, thus risking the manicure falling away in just a few days…I want the rainbow. I may pick up a few of these colors if they're easy to hand, to have for nail stamping; but I'm not going to make the concerted effort I was half-planning. I don't feel the need to call my local Sally Beauty every week to see if the colors are in yet, then hop a bus to downtown and scoop up the polishes before they're snatched up by other frenzied buyers.

Nail polish gurus, is there a way to describe the different effects of the OMG holographics versus the Kaleidescope holographics? I feel like one should be called ‘prismatic' and the other something else, but I don't know what the other name would be. I would dearly love to know, not only so that I can more accurately determine what a given collection or color will look like, but so that I can more precisely tell the various nail polish vendors what kinds of things I would like to see. (Another example of imprecise communication: duochrome. Zoya seems to apply this term to several polishes that I would not call “duochrome”. If a polish has one base color and then also has gold shimmer, that doesn't automagically qualify it for “duochrome” status. Duotone perhaps; but not duochrome.)

In other news, Zoya's Intimate collection is available beginning January 15th and according to the swatches over at Scrangie's site, it looks like this collection has a few colors that will interest me: specifically, Caitlin (lighter version of Kelly), Gemma, and Jules. I like Kelly, and think that Caitlin will be a nice lighter version of that color for spring (or what passes for spring here in the Pacific Northwest, Home of the Moss People.) A few colors from China Glaze's Anchors Away collection also look good. I'm liking Sea Spray, White Cap, Sunset Sail, and Knotty. (So what is up with me all of a sudden, shifting focus from the darker jeweltones to the muted greys? Or maybe it's just that muted and greyed colors weren't available that much before…? Hm.) Knotty looks kind of like Sally Hansen's Fedora, which I wanted primarily for the name and secondarily for the light-beige-with-gold color (shut up, I'm firmly ensconced in the Sam Adama/Sasha Roiz Appreciation Zone and since today is the airing of the final five episodes of Caprica, I'm also in mourning); but if I can get that color in a superior formula, I'm all for it. Ahoy looks a bit like Zoya's Reece, but it's a glass-fleck so I don't know that it would work for nail stamping.

I seem to be one of the few nail polish bloggers who's immune to the charms of the crackle nail polish trend. Both China Glaze and OPI have crackle collections due to come out this spring, and I am happy to leave those off my list as even possible acquisitions.
