Saturday Soundtrack: Cry Little Sister (Carfax Abbey/DJ Ferret Remix)

First, I'd like to apologize to ProfoundUforia who really was enjoying looking to me for an interesting, relaxing, ethereal soundtrack...and here I go on a darkwave kick. June will be lighter and bouncier (but not necessarily 'relaxing'.)

Second, you know how sometimes you listen to a remix of a song and it just...sucks? And other times you listen to remixes of a song and you find one that is both an excellent tribute to the original, but somehow turns it up to 11? Yeah, this is the second bit. I not only found an excellent remix, but an excellent remix of that excellent remix. (And if it nested any deeper I might have gotten dizzy.)

When The Lost Boys was playing in theaters, I saw it with my high school circle of friends. I didn't realize at the time that Santa Carla was in fact a city located less than 40 miles away, and that in less than 4 years I would be living and going to university in Santa Cruz. The "People Are Strange" montage when they arrive in Santa Carla, with all the punks and the guy dressed like a monk? That was south end of Pacific Garden Mall just past the metro center, and yes, that monk-guy was a regular fixture there until the 1989 Loma Prieta quake. The brothers' comic book store? Interior shots were from Atlantis Fantasyworld at its old location. The shop has moved to slightly classier digs, at the north end of Cedar Street (technically, one block west of Pacific Garden Mall proper.) And yes, I've been in it - in the old location, at the west end of PGM where it was when it was used for filming and in its new location. As far as the underground hotel...there were definitely caves around Santa Cruz, but no sunken hotel with nocturnal residents. (When I was living in Santa Carla/Cruz, all the nocturnal residents were the computer geeks. We were pasty white because we were always indoors playing Nettrek or debating the merits of various versions of *NIX; and we were primarily nocturnal because we were up all night playing D&D and Shadowrun and Paranoia, teaching outselves HTML because it was fun, watching cult movies and quoting the scripts, going on fudruns and suchwhich. We had to sleep some time...)

I don't own the movie...but I own the soundtrack.

There are umpty-bajillion remixes of this song, even one by the original composer (srsly. Look for the vids by "G Tom Mac", that's Gerard McMann.)

Saturday Soundtrack: Cry Little Sister (Carfax Abbey/DJ Ferret Remix)

The original version of the song:

Carfax Abbey's version:

And DJ Ferret's version of Carfax Abbey's version (and my favorite, which, sadly, is not available in MP3 format):

Song lyrics, for all you other Children of the 80s:

A last fire will rise behind those eyes
Black house will rock, blind boys don't lie
Immortal fear, that voice so clear
Through broken walls, that scream I hear

Cry, little sister Thou shall not fall
Come to your brother Thou shall not die
Unchain me, sister Thou shall not fear
Love is with your brother Thou shall not kill

Blue masquerade, strangers look on
When will they learn this loneliness?
Temptation heat beats like a drum
Deep in your veins, I will not lie

Little sister Thou shall not fall
Come to your brother Thou shall not die
Unchain me, sister Thou shall not fear
Love is with your brother Thou shall not kill

My Shangri-La
I can't forget
Why you were mine
I need you now

Cry, little sister Thou shall not fall
Come to your brother Thou shall not die
Unchain me, sister Thou shall not fear
Love is with your brother Thou shall not kill
