(Yeah, I'm just a wee tiny bit excited.)
There are groups out there that mainly produce short musical segments for use in movie trailers (Batman, Man of Steel, I Am Legend), video game trailers (HALO, Mass Effect), and so forth. A lot of this music never makes it into any official soundtrack for the movie or game - but it may be one of the things that attracted some people to see a movie or play a game. Then there's the extra excitement it generates in fans of the movie or game, who would have put down money even if this particular snippet hadn't been used in any trailer...but who would probably be kind of happy to have it anyway.
I am and always have been a huge soundtrack junkie. For a while there, in the 80s, the pop music from a given movie was the "soundtrack," even if the song had been playing in the background of a minor scene for approximately two seconds; and the instrumental/orchestral music was only sold as the "motion picture score." This lead to some disappointing purchases. Thankfully there seems to be something of a soundtrack renaissance, and us orchestral junkies get our fix.
