I purchased both of the Smashbox cream eyeliner palettes this past Christmas season (December 2012), and took one on my trip to IMATS LA. I like the palette. But after reading this story of egregiously snotty customer dealings by a Smashbox makeup artist, I will not be buying or recommending any more Smashbox products. This is absolutely ridiculous. (And their claims on Facebook that they tried to get ahold of her? They obviously didn’t really try that hard. The person emailed Smashbox as requested, the Smashbox PR/marketing team could have posted on her Tumblr, they could have had a team member post a message to her FB wall…they had options. They chose not to pursue them. No follow through? There will be consequences.) This is the reason that I marked that I would not be repurchasing these: not because the product quality is bad, not because it’s a poor value, but because the company seems to have such low regard for its clients. I have lots of choices of where to spend my money.
Okay, now for the actual review.
I bought these a bit on a whim. I was initially a bit surprised when the box actually arrived, because the palettes are so small!! They're slimline, and about the width and height of a credit card. That's not going to be a whole lot of product, I thought. I had read some other blogs that cautioned not to sweep the brush through the product, but to stipple it…and to use the same technique for application. I did get good results when I used that method. The brush is a bit small-handled for me, and the brush head is a little large for my preferences, but it's not horribly bad. It's just not very good for tightlining. I tend to travel with other brushes, which I prefer using with this palette. Even so, the stippling works better. I think I'll try the same application technique with my Physician's Formula cream liners, and see if they don't stay in place just a little bit better (especially the “Glam” shades!)
I like that you get so many colors in the palette. I also like that it's very slim, because it travels extremely well. (I keep the plastic covering on the mirror because I'm paranoid about the mirror breaking and sending shards into the cream liner.) As stated above, though, if I had heard this story about Smashbox public relations before I purchased these palettes, I wouldn't have bought them.
