Sunday Ramblings: January 25, 2015

So yesterday was my birthday, and two-weeks-and-change ago (on January 9th) was the site's sixth birthday.

I've just about settled into the new posting schedule for the year. I haven't been able to write any beauty tools posts, nor any of the indie-shop reviews that I have left (not too many, because I've all but ceased buying from new companies and really minimized my buying at all.) I do like the reduced posting frequency, both because I'm able to spend a little more time on the content and because I feel less like I'm just firehosing my product profiles out onto the wider Internet. And while I still have a backlog…it isn't nearly as large as it was this time last year. (It's also far far better organized!)

Sunday Ramblings: January 25, 2015

I have started using one of my super-discounted-price excellent-paper leather-cover journals to schedule and brainstorm for the blog, and it's nice to have a book for that instead of repurposing yet another legal pad - which was an acceptable and workable organization system…but I'd always end up with different legal pads because I'd grab whichever one was closest at the time. So now here's me, Getting All Organized. This wasn't a scheduler or journal that I went out and bought just for this purpose. This was one of the many journals that I bought when they were in the bargain-priced section at the bookseller's. I have lots and lots of others for use as regular journals. But it is kind of nice to have enough of those that I don't feel anxious about using one as a “thoughts collection bin.”

I'd like to start writing more essays/op-eds/whatever one might call them. I want to talk about my thoughts on the blogging community, on this and that product or brand, on this or that technique. I'd really like to participate in some kind of a blogger collaboration or weekly post-writing series. And dammit, I'd like to start doing at least one EoTW. But…I'm still at the point where I have almost no energy when I get home from work, and I don't know that that's going to change until May or thereabouts. (I am Very Unhappy With This Job. I've worked in tech for 25 years, I've been hospitalized once for exhaustion, but never have I had a nervous breakdown. This particular place pushed me to that point in just over two months.)I'd like to start writing more essays/op-eds/whatever one might call them. I've been working through re-photographing my old colors, too - to put them in the new style, but also to get much better-quality pictures of them. While doing that, I've been working at putting together “collection” montages, especially for the older BE kits that I bought but never swatched (for photographic purposes.) I have found that, while I still have a lot of BE, I also managed to chuck a good bit of it when I was purging the lesser-performing colors back in late 2011/early 2012. The colors that I pitched tended to be LE colors released in 2008/2009. Most of the Chocolate Decadence kit? Gone. Sweet Decadence? Likewise. The colors were mostly browns, and were pretty close to sheer. I had to foil them, and use a lot of the shadow, to get what I considered a good color payoff. I'm not going to rush to Ebay to re-buy any of these colors, because…well, there's a reason that I got rid of them in the first place. But if they show up in a kit and I can get mini versions for a ridiculously low price, I won't say no. Purely for swatching purposes, of course. (Damn this completist streak…!) I've also found - somewhat embarrassingly - that I still own enough BE to create profiles for a

few dozen

hell of a lot of the older kits, and have enough of those to post one a week for the entire year. And still have kits left over. (BE used to repromote a lot of their older colors in kits, and people would buy the kits then sell the pieces on Ebay, and that's how I acquired most of my hoard: either through kits, or one-off bargain purchases off of Ebay.)

I'm looking foward to the 2015 new-release Megaslicks balm stains from Wet n Wild. They're good quality at an amazing price - and unlike the latest additions to the Colorburst Balm line, they're actually -=stains=- so while the shiny wears off, the color stays a good long time. I've seen photos on a few other sites, and with two exceptions they look like they're shades that will look good on me. I'm also looking forward to - somehow, somewhen - actually getting the mental energy to write some of those essays I was talking about. Shall we start the betting pool on how few I'll actually get done this year? (Sadly, I'm going to go with “under four…”) I know that these goals are goals, and I don't beat myself up if I don't meet these goals. But damn it, these are actually fun goals! I want to meet these goals because I like writing, and meeting the goals will mean that I get to have fun along the way.
