The Skin Project: Face Masks and Treatments

This week's topic is face masks and treatments. There's just one problem with that. I don't regularly use face masks or any type of treatment.

(I've tried…but they're just not for me.)

I don't love the cleanup process, I don't see or feel any positive results, I'm not convinced of an overwhelming need for me to make this a part of my skincare routine. For me, this is like toning: needed and/or desired by others, but not a part of my life.

Over the years I've tried a few facial masks, just to see if they did anything for me. Back when I was younger, I tried a strawberry-scented peel-off face mask. Yes I noticed the mask removing dead skin and surface dirt, but…it was a hassle to apply, the wait process was annoying, I didn't like how my skin felt as the mask was drying, and overall it didn't seem like it was worth the trouble. So I stopped.

Two decades later, I tried using Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask, which is both inexpensive and gets many high marks from people who use it. I used it once a week for a month. I didn't have any breakouts or dry skin or negative effects, but my skin didn't feel smoother or firmer after that month…and again, I really disliked the process of applying, wearing, and removing the mask. So I pitched the rest of the Mint Julep Mask. I've tried freebies from various companies, and I keep coming to the same conclusion: too much trouble for not enough effect, don't like it, won't keep doing it, thanks ever so.

I've come to the conclusion that face masks are not going to be a part of my skincare routine at this point. They may not be in the future. They don't seem to work for me, either in terms of effectiveness or any enjoyment I get out of the process. (This is possibly due to the fact that I freak out if I can feel anything on my face…and a facial mask certainly qualifies.) Some people see definite results from using facial masks or other semiregular treatments. Everyone will have different needs and preferences.
