Zoya’s Jem

On Zoya's site, and when sitting in the bottle, this color looks very lovely and promising: a rich royal purple with gold and bronze sparkle. Initially I wasn't going to get this, but when I saw it in Ulta while shopping with Sirvinya, I decided to add it to my basket. Sadly, when I painted my nails, it took me five coats before I even began to see the first glimmerings of bronze or gold sparkle, even in full sunlight. (This was the last day of summer-ish weather in Seattle, so we had glorious sunlight.) I was reminded of some of the Sally Hansen Nail Prisms, where in some bottles the duochrome was painted on the inside of the bottle…but wouldn't show up on the nail. I only saw purple on my first coat, and that was nearly opaque. I was careful to thoroughly shake the bottle before applying each subsequent coat, but the copper and gold never materialized - even after five coats.

I don't know if I just got a bum batch, or if this color really needs six or seven coats before it shows the promise of bronze and copper sparkle that was so evident in the bottle.
