BBAC 2013, Day 1: Stila’s Waterproof Smudge Crayons

I don't know how long these have been part of the Stila line, but I have the hazy thought that they're only a few years old. (I could be wrong.) These are similar to the various jumbo eye pencils out there from NYX, Sephora, Tarte, Urban Decay, and any number of other manufacturers. Stila's pencils are a gel-based formula that glides on smoothly and evenly, allows for smudging and blending for the first 10 or so minutes, and is waterproof.

Like the all of these other eyeliner pencils, these smudge crayons let you easily apply a base cream shadow on the whole lid (or a part of it, if you prefer) without having to use a brush. The lids also snap closed, meaning the product has less chance of drying out; and you twist the pencil to get more product, which means no product lost to sharpeners.

I use the lighter shades a bit more often, but I have found an interesting alternate use for Umber and Smoke: they both work really well for me as eyebrow pencils. Smoke is a great color for ash-blondes or for lighter golden-brown haired people, while Umber works better on straight brunettes. I'm guessing that the black pencil would work well as a multitasking item for folks who want to fill in black brows. (I haven't actually tried it, because that color would be too dark for me.) I use Smoke exclusively on my brows, but I have two Umber pencils: one just for my brows, and one for my eyelids/waterline. I may be overcautious, but I don't want to mix any bacteria that may be on my brows, anywhere near my waterline.

The shades are Antique, Black, Dazzle, Kitten, Midnight Blue, Pink Violet, Rose, Smoke, and Umber.
