Spending ban: week 6

Posted on Sunday, at • • 382 views

On January 1 2014 I (and several other beauty bloggers, lead by Demi McCain) started a 90-day spending ban: no buying makeup or beauty products, except for replacement of basics (soap, shampoo, et cetera.) You can find everyone's posts on Twitter using the hashtag #90daysnospending. Hello, second full week of February. (Today, we have snow. The west coast is finally getting some precipitation. Not enough to stave off drought conditions in California…yet…but hopefully this won't be the only winter storm to come visit this side of the landmass.)

Week 4, one purchase: one of the Derp (mistake) colors from Shiro Cosmetics. Other than that, nada. (I tend to stock up on sundries when they're on sale, so have plenty of soap/shampoo/toothpaste/what-have-you. I have no idea where I get that from. But it does make the spending ban simpler, since I'm not going into any beauty stores…)

Spending ban: week 6

I've added to my post-spending-ban wish list. Since none of these items are limited edition, though, I can afford to wait until I've built up a decent-sized pile of “fun money” and then go hit the stores. Possibly I'll even be able to catch some things during the summer sales that seem to hit at Beauty.com (which is beginning to eclipse Sephora as my makeup destination-of-choice) and this and that indie company.

I've spoken about the Stila Waterproof Smudge Sticks before. They had a decent line-up previously: about 14 colors, with occasional new shades introduced here and there. I own several, and hadn't looked back at the lineup in quite some time. There were some cool shades that were marked as limited edition - Periwinkle, Empress, a light bright teal - but after checking at Sephora and on the Stila site a few times, I wasn't seeing any significant additions. I do remember tweeting once that if Stila made a dark red eyeliner, I'd buy it - because I totally would. Yesterday I was browsing online and noticed that instead of around a dozen shades, Stila now has thirty colors of Waterproof Smudge Stick including a dark red (Deep Burgundy) and a medium-deep red (Deep Fuchsia). They've moved away from their previous naming convention - probably out of necessity, because while the “aquatic lifeforms” thing was interesting, they might have started to get into Trying Too Hard territory - and have a yellow, several new blues, four “blackened” colors (purple, blue, green, brown), the aforementioned Empress and Periwinkle which now seem to be permanent, another white…and a yellow. Not gold (though they do have one of those, sort of) but yellow. Bright, near-primary yellow. I'm going to have to check these out! They're more expensive than the Rimmel Soft Kohl eyeliners, but they do last a long time…and Stila has colors that don't exist in any of the Rimmel eyeliner collections. The colors I already own are: Empress, Periwinkle, Teal, Stingray, Moray, Purple Tang, Blue Ribbon, Triggerfish, Lionfish, and Tetra.
