Stila’s Waterproof Smudge Stick in Empress

White and bright eyeliners seem to appear in waves: first they're all the rage for three or four years, then they fade back into obscurity for a decade or two and you can't find one for love nor money. I like white eyeliners, though - both for putting on my waterline, to brighten my eyes, and occasionally for adding to my top lash line. I was thrilled when Stila added Empress to its Smudge Stick collection! It's a nice color, good weight, not semisheer…but it isn't the easiest thing to get a smooth, even application. It's not as patchy as some other eyeliners I've used, but it's not as even as I'd prefer, either. I had to go over the swatch-area a few times to get the solid-looking sample I photographed.

Photos that show how the product actually performs...! See how I create my swatches

A montage of three images: top left, close-up of the eyeliner tube or pencil barrel; top right, the eyeliner applied over bare skin, to better show the shade and properties; and below, the eyeliner applied on the eyelid at the lash line.

When Empress and Snow were added to the lineup originally, it was temporary. Empress has become permanent, but Snow has…well, faded. I'm glad that I got backups of Snow when I did, because I prefer its application to this waterproof smudge stick. It's just a touch smoother and more even.
