NOTE 03/25/2013: I will no longer be purchasing or reviewing any new China Glaze products, aside from the two that I have in the publishing queue. All previously-published posts will remain up. Info & links of interest

Very pretty color…but there are some issues. Aside from the typical Romantique-era spreadability problems, there’s the fragility. For whatever reason, this polish is much more suseptible to scratches, dings, dents, and scrapes. It reminded me of the old Sally Hansen Nail Chrome polishes circa 2003 that looked very pretty until the first time something rubbed up against the nail and marred the finish. I think this will work fine for nail art and nail stamping, but probably will last much much longer with a rock-solid top coat.

OPI’s Not Like the Movies

OPI’s Not Like the Movies
  • Manufacturer: OPI
  • Availability: part of OPI's Katy Perry collaboration
  • Color Range: semisheer purple/silver/green multichrome sparkle
  • Staying Power: 3 out of 4 stars
  • Cost/Amount: USD$9 for 14 ml / .5 fl oz
  • Would you purchase again: no - I already own too many other similar-ish polishes
  • Similar shades: Zoya's Adina, Wet N Wild's Gray's Anatomy

n the Katy Perry collaboration with OPI was announced, I wasn’t all that interested. When the promo photos started showing up, I still wasn’t that interested. The polishes went on sale…and still, no interest. Then I happened to see one particular Ebay seller’s photo of this color and I was hooked.

The polish looked more blue-toned than it ended up being, which - I’ll admit - was a bit disappointing. The realization that I effectively had another Ki on my hands wasn’t making me a particularly happy camper, either. I like both Ki and its brighter cousin Adina, but not so much that I also want to own dupes or near-dupes from other companies. By the time I had the third coat in place, I was noticing the mauve-ish duochrome flashes; and by the fourth coat I was seeing the (admittedly sparse) sparkle. So perhaps this would be just different enough that I wouldn’t be too upset at buying the bottle. I headed to the backyard to see if I could actually get some photos in the sunlight…and that’s when the color really showed off.

Zoya’s Coco
  • Manufacturer: Zoya/Art of Beauty
  • Availability: originally released as part of Zoya's Uptown collection
  • Color Range: cool brown-mauve creme
  • Staying Power: 4 out of 4 stars
  • Cost/Amount: USD$8 for 14 ml / .5 fl oz
  • Would you purchase again: yes

I really should have a bit more faith in Zoya’s creme polishes..! While many of their metallics take three or even four coats for full coverage, their cremes - like Coco - are almost fine with one coat, and perfect with two. (With one coat there were a few uneven areas, but no outright transparency.)

Coco covered evenly and completely in two coats, spreadability was fairly good - some minor unevenness on one coat - and the color truly is gorgeous. Like Paige, this is more of an autumnal shade than a spring color. It’s a deeper mauve, the brown is much more of an undertone - not a mauve-ish brown, which is what I halfway suspected from the description and the various manicure photos I was able to find around the web.
