ColourPop’s BFF Mascara collection

I love the different colors - and the brighter colors! (And the white mascara.) I love that they’re easily accessible. I don’t love that they aren’t available in a waterproof formula. The wand is a fairly standard “bottle-brush” wand with a helix-twist that does a fairly decent job of getting color on most of the lashes, though to get the endmost and innermost lashes I found it easier to just use the end of the wand and push up from beneath the lashes. Each color has its own saying on the side of its tube, and for most of these colors, the writing matches the mascara shade.

The formula is pretty thick. With the exception of the red shade, the mascara clumps fairly easily. It also doesn’t apply evenly and, because it’s not black or dark brown, it’s easier to see when you aren’t able to apply one of these all the way to the roots of your lashes. This formula also doesn’t build well…or, perhaps, it builds TOO well. I was trying to get full coverage using Yellow Goodbye, and ended up applying three coats. I had the stereotypical “spider” lashes, and it was not a great thing.

Photos that show how the product actually performs...! See how I create my swatches

One coat of Blue Ya Mind on the upper lashes. One coat of Brownie Points on the upper lashes. One coat of Kiss and Teal on the upper lashes. Two coats of Left On Red on the upper lashes. Two coats of Little White Lie on the upper lashes. One coat of Lovers' Coral on the upper lashes. Two coats of Pink Inc. on the upper lashes. One coat of Plum And Get It on the upper lashes. One coat of Wine o Clock on the upper lashes. Three coats of Yellow Goodbye mascara on the upper lashes.

I have had some fun with these: dualcolored lashes, "color ball" lashes, and the standard "this is my mascara today" look. I do have to wear them with a waterproof top coat, or they not only flake, but anytime my eyes water, the mascara starts weeping. This can look particularly alarming with Left on Red and Wine o Clock. I apply a coat of clear mascara waterproofer (NYX's Proof It) on top, and while that doesn't make the mascara last as long as my actual waterproof-formula mascaras, it doesn't flake nearly as fast, and it doesn't wash off with rain, sweat, or humidity.

I have all of the shades currently available except black. I have enough black mascaras - give me the other colors!

This collection contained:

  • Black on Black — black (original)
  • Blue Ya Mind — medium cobalt blue (original)
  • Brownie Points — medium brown
  • Kiss and Teal — medium-bright aqua-green (original)
  • Left On Red — medium red (original)
  • Little White Lie — white (original)
  • Lovers' Coral — medium-bright coral
  • Pink Inc. — medium-bright pink (original)
  • Plum And Get It — dark violet
  • Wine o Clock — medium-dark cabernet
  • Yellow Goodbye — medium-bright yellow (original)

There was - briefly - a light blue mascara, called Sky High. I wasn't interested in getting it. I guess not many other people were either, because it was the first new mascara shade introduced, and was discontinued before Wine o Clock came out. Kiss n Teal was discontinued. I would love to see an emerald or deep olive mascara.
