I love these! They’re easy to apply, easy to get more of the product (no sharpening, you just dial up the crayon), easy to find at any drugstore or Ulta-type shop, and are often on sale. They act and apply like Tarte’s Lipsurgence pencils, but they cost quite a bit less and have better color payoff. They even have a faint mint scent, similar to the Tarte Lipsurgences (it’s slightly fainter, and it fades just a little faster - so you won’t be smelling or tasting this all day, like you would with some flavored lip products.)
I own nine of these, and only two have turned out to be colors that I won’t use very much - and that’s only because I don’t love how those particular shades look on me. I do wish that they’d expand their line just slightly, include a few more nudes, a kickass medium-vibrancy blue-red, and possibly a mauve. I also know that about half of these shades are semisheer on me, which probably means that for women with deeper-pigmented lips, they are even fainter.
The less positive bits about these pencils are that they do feel a bit like inexpensive balm, and to some people they're unacceptably heavy-feeling. They don't feel as heavy as Chapstick or something like Carmex, but some people have commented that they feel waxy. To some people, this is not an issue. To others, this is an issue. To a few, this is an absolute deal breaker. If you have concerns that these won't work for you, I recommend that you buy one on sale (get a near-natural color like Precious or Honey) and wear it for several days. If it bothers you, then you know that this particular product isn't for you - and you won't have paid full price to find out. Personally, I do have a problem with things like Chapstick, or even wearing something like Burt's Bees shimmer sticks during the day, but I have no problems whatsoever with the Balmstains.
