Fyrinnae’s Atomic Afterglow

Fyrinnae’s Atomic Afterglow

Fyrinnae's site classifies this color as a “gold/silver/copper”...to which I say, I think we're using different definitions for “gold”. When it's patted dry over primer I see a charcoal with some copper and silver shimmer. When it's applied wet I see charcoal, with a more prominent copper and silver shimmer. But the main color I see is always charcoal. It actually reminds me of Sally Hansen's Opulent Cloud nail polish.

Fyrinnae's web site describes this as a pink…but to my perception, it's a pinkish purple. It's also almost an eyeshadow-version of Zoya's Faye.

This is similar to Chivalry, but with a deeper purple base and a bit more of a pronounced shimmer. It's also a bit like a warmer version of Faerie Glamour. (I like Faerie Glamour, which is an Arcane Magic shade; I just don't think the colorshift is as pronounced in Faerie Glamour as it is in some other AM colors.)

Many of these shadows are duochromes, but not all are dramatically so. (Madam and Eve is a very dramatic duochrome shift. Evocation is a bit more subtle.) These have been a separate collection on the Fyrinnae site as long as I’ve been aware of the company. The line keeps growing. At this point, I’ve stopped tracking what was added when…

Saturday Soundtrack: Brenda Stubbert (Ashley MacIsaac)

The studio version: And a live version of the song: There is an official video for this song (available on the enhanced CD), but it's not anywhere on YouTube that I could find. You can argue that Ashley MacIsaac doesn't do anything that hasn't been done before - by bands in the 60s, the 70s, the 80s. You can then turn around and argue that no one's really doing anything new, they're just combining old things in new ways. And...

News Roundup for week 17, 2011

News Roundup for week 17, 2011

Posted on Friday, at

So everyone with a television is watching the royal wedding today. Except me, it seems. I wish them well, in a vague sort of way, but I barely have patience for the nuptial productions that I'm obliged to attend. And those are usually over in about an hour, maybe two. I now have my posting schedule arranged out to, through, and past Dragon*Con (which is 125 days from now.) And after Dragon*Con, I'll presumably have a whole bunch of...

BareMinerals’ In Fashion III kit

BareMinerals’ In Fashion III kit

Posted on Thursday, at

This was the first In Fashion kit with a brand new color - Steel (which was featured in another Nordstrom-release kit, Drop Red Gorgeous, just a year later.) It also included a blush which hadn’t been in regular rotation nor released in any kits for quite some time.

China Glaze’s Urban Chic collection

China Glaze’s Urban Chic collection

This collection was a partial re-release of a previous collection, but also included several new shades. I only have three colors from this collection, and won’t be looking for the others. Awakening, Optimistic, and Cafe Mystique are pretty enough, but Optimistic and Cafe Mystique are both on the thin side, and require four coats for total opacity. Many of China Glaze’s polishes from later collections seem to be a bit thicker; and one of the attractions of many...

BareMinerals’ Festive Beauty kit

BareMinerals’ Festive Beauty kit

One of QVC’s exclusive kits, with no new items…and just one color that had been recently pulled out of rotation (Chardonnay). Kits like these are good for beginners, because they include a mix of products: eyeshadow, blush, lipstick. The retail price for these QVC kits is the same as for three full-size individual eye colors. If one loves the makeup bags, that’s an extra bonus.

Sally Hansen’s The Real Teal

Sally Hansen’s The Real Teal

The shimmer on this is very faint…but it's there. The color is not quite aqua enough to be a Miami Vice 1980s color, but it's darn close. This is almost a one-coat polish! However, this also has a rather strong smell. It's not so strong that it will knock you over or power-clean your sinuses, but it definitely smells like a non-big-3-free nail polish. This color and Celeb City are the two strongest-smelling polishes I own from Sally...
